This book starts with our main couple nowhere being near to each other, and after the first few chapters I was really wondering how they would even meet. But when they finally did it was so great an explosive which is such a perfect thing fitting their relationship.
Riven is someone who puts themselves and their safety behind others. This always makes for such great character interactions between that character and their loved ones, so I absolutely loved that. She has a crew together that I enjoyed greatly too. Say that I'm queer and love the found family trope but damn I do love it. Their band of misfits deeply loves each other and that is reflected in many parts of the book. What I loved about this group too is that they had a longer backstory that slowly uncovered during the book. It made their characters very fleshed out and I quite liked that.
Asa really is a princess in the way she behaves, but for sure a badass one. I adore how fierce she loves her sister Kya and how that lead the story. Siblings caring for one another is something that doesn't happen that often in YA books. Often the focus is on their friends, found family or romance interests. And while that absolutely gives us great books too, it was awesome to see love for a sibling to be such a central part of a story.
I also want to mention real quick that I absolutely love Ty, he's precious.
The book often had the plot going to places I would have never expected and would pull me into something new quite often. But this totally felt like a great thing and I enjoyed it a lot.
On to book 2!
