How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler
4.0
While the writing style and tone might not be for everyone, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying is a surprisingly engaging and self-aware fantasy romp. The protagonist, Davi, is reminiscent of Deadpool with her irreverent humor and knack for breaking the fourth wall.
The pacing is excellent. We're thrown into the action as Davi, stuck in a 1000-year time loop, wakes up in a freezing pond. After centuries of being manipulated by a wizard, she decides to take matters into her own hands and join the 'other side' – and ultimately, rule it. This unexpected turn, while initially jarring, ultimately makes sense given Davi's personality and her need to assert control over her own fate.
The story benefits from joining Davi's journey 1000 years in. We gain a unique perspective as she navigates this world she knows intimately while simultaneously experiencing it anew. The supporting cast is well-developed, and Davi's affection for them is evident despite her often sarcastic demeanor.
How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying is a refreshing take on the fantasy genre, filled with humor, action, and unexpected twists. It's a wild ride that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.
