City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
3.0
15-year-old Clary Fray witnesses a murder no one else seems to have seen with a body that vanishes into thin air. Then her mother goes missing and she is introduced into the world of Shadowhunters and demons.
That' it. That's the plot. Demons, sword-swinging, bow-carrying, tattooed teenagers and bad jokes.
“It means 'Shadowhunters: Looking Better in Black Than the Widows of our Enemies Since 1234'.”
More than anything this was a nostalgic read for me. Definitely enjoyed the book more than the movie and series they made about The Mortal Instruments.
If I ignore the fact that these characters are supposed to be 15, I actually quite enjoy the story. Some of the conversations are definitely cringe-worthy, but I remember thinking they were super funny when I was younger, so there we go.
I mean...
“What's this?" he demanded, looking from Clary to his companions, as if they might know what she was doing there.
"It's a girl," Jace said, recovering his composure. "Surely you've seen girls before, Alec. Your sister Isabelle is one.”
and “What do you want?" "Just coffee. Black - like my soul.”
I still think that the general idea of this world is pretty cool and I might even continue reading - if only to compare book Malec to the Netflix one.
