Last Witnesses: Unchildlike Stories by Svetlana Alexiévich

emotional informative reflective fast-paced

5.0

Absolutely heartbreaking testimonies from children’s experiences of the Eastern Front, focusing mainly on the Belarusian people’s suffering and will to resist. The horror of the Eastern Front are best captured through the lens of children’s eyes, and Alexievich once again proves her immense storytelling talent and empathy as she transcribes hundreds of memories on paper.
One of the most important books ever written about Soviet and Eastern European history, in my opinion. Resonating deeply with the current invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in Palestine, these testimonies are immortal in their resonance and lessons.
