The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

5.0

The ending of this is much creepier than I remember from the first time I read it...

Growing up, our home had this mustard yellow linoleum with a swirly pattern. I remember staring at it many nights when I was awake with various ailments - headaches, insomnia, the flu. I saw faces looking back at me, laughing at me as they spun around in dizzying circles. I always think of them as I read this story and I wonder if I had been locked into a room surrounded by that pattern, would I have devolved into the same madness as Jane?

Note: This is not the edition I believed I was ordering. I ordered a beautiful copy from Amazon based on the product photo and instead received the book pictured here, which is the correct book based on the ISBN. It's ugly to look at and ugly to hold. But the story is still great. I'll be replacing it with another edition at some point.

10/31/2020: I recently read [b:Mexican Gothic|53152636|Mexican Gothic|Silvia Moreno-Garcia|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1575673549l/53152636._SX50_SY75_.jpg|73647361] because I was told it was based loosely on this book. I did see some familiar elements, but as soon as I finished that book, I came back to read this one again. The Yellow Wallpaper may be much shorter, but it's also a far superior story.
