Private Revolutions: Four Women Face China's New Social Order by Yuan Yang

4.0

Explorations of a changing China from the perspective of 4 women. A good pairing with Other Rivers, which I read earlier this year. One of the themes better highlighted in this is how restrictive the hukou system can be in effectively rationing services based on birthplace; it also shows some variation in individuals' experiences of opportunity in the country's education and labor system, and highlights nascent attempts to develop private/community services in a state-dominated system.
