Dark Corners by Megan Goldin

5.0

I was so excited when I saw Megan Goldin revisiting the character of podcaster Rachel Krall in her new book, Dark Corners. The 2020 book, The Night Swim, where we first meet this character was a solid 5 star read for me and this follow-up does not disappoint!

ABOUT THE BOOK
“Suspected serial killer Terence Bailey is about to be released from prison when he gets a surprise visit from Maddison Logan, a hot, young influencer with a huge social media following. Hours later, Maddison disappears, and police suspect she’s been kidnapped – or worse.

When they hit a wall in the investigation, the FBI reluctantly call in true-crime podcaster Rachel Krall for help in finding the missing influencer. Maddison seems to only exist on social media; she has no family, no friends, and other than in her posts, most people have never seen her. Who is she, really?

Using a fake Instagram account, Rachel goes undercover to BuzzCon, a popular influencer conference, where she discovers a world of fierce rivalry that may have turned lethal.”

I could not put this one down – it hits the ground running and propels us forward at a rapid pace which I loved as it perfectly added to the storyline tension. The background of the superficial world of influencers was a fascinating layer. And I really enjoyed getting to know the character of Rachel Krall again. She’s smart but also cares more about people that just chasing the story. Even though this is the second book in a series, I can’t see any reason you could not read as a standalone. I honestly didn’t know how the threads of this story were going to come together until the final reveals and I loved it!

In my opinion, Megan Goldin has nailed the police procedural with a thriller element perfectly and I was completely gripped from start to finish.
