I had great fun with this dark fantasy. I enjoyed the well developed world (and I certainly wouldn’t want to live there!). Enjoyed the characters (despite their many many flaws). Had fun with the language. Lots of made up words and very creative cursing and dialect.
The humor is very distinct. If you read the first few chapters and don’t like it, you probably won’t enjoy the book. I was giggling at lots of the scatalogical curses especially.
I don’t think I’ll read The Daughters War since it’s a prequel and I don’t have much interest in what happened before this book, but I am interested if he writes a sequel. This book does end in an okay fashion. It’s clear that more will be happening, but this story is concluded satisfactorily and isn’t on a cliffhanger. (Which is excellent, since in acknowledgments, author mentions inspiration from authors who notoriously have left things hanging in their worlds, George R R Martin and Patrick Rothfuss.)
