After reading rather mixed reviews, I didn’t expect much of this book, but I really was proven wrong. Sisters is above all about the relationship between two sisters (surprise surprise) and the intense connectedness between them. I shall try not to say too much, but this reminded me an awful lot of Shirley Jackson’s The Bird’s Nest and Julia Armfield’s Our Wives Under the Sea with its strange fluctuating narrative. I have read people say that the ‘twist’ of this novel is too predictable, but I don’t think it is intended to be a thriller with a ‘twist’, but rather a psychological study of the mind as haunted house.
