The Atlas of Us by Kristin Dwyer

5.0

I loved this book. It was devastating and real. It dealt with the topic of grief masterfully. My star rating system rarely gives out a 5-star. For me, a 5-star read is something that you will read again and recommend to people. I don't read many YA books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was really good.

Atlas' father has died of cancer. Her life has spun out of control, and she is required to hike the Sierra trail in CA. It's something her dad wanted to do before he died. She meets a group of late teens/early twenties in a program where they change names and restore the trail after a wildfire. Now, as Maps, she deals with her grief, starts to have feelings for her trail lead, King, and makes lasting friendships with Sugar, Books, and Junior.

The internal dialogue that Maps/Atlas has with herself is written so well and narrated beautifully. I've never lost someone that close to me, but you could feel her pain, grief, and anger.
