Asylum by Madeleine Roux

1.0

Type of read: Commuter Read.

What made me pick it up: I was looking for another series to get into and when you tell me that something is recommended for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, you've kind of got me. Plus, I liked that I could get all the books in the series nearly all at once.

Overall rating: Ok, I'm going to start out by saying that I was really hoping 'Asylum' would be the redemption needed for the ending of 'Escape from Asylum'... and it absolutely wasn't. This is always where I struggle because if I keep going in the series, there will be only one left and then I'll feel like I need to finish the series...even if it's subpar. And so far, that's what 'Asylum' was, subpar. It just didn't feel complete. Parts of it felt stretched, others felt rushed. I know teenagers are weird and mean and their emotions switch, but dang...I felt like Jordan, Abby, and Dan just couldn't get it together. (This is even within the context of the book and everything that was going on.) Their characters were just meh, and it felt like there was unnecessary tension between them when that could have been better used building or improving other plot holes. You can tell that Roux is trying to write it in a way that evokes emotion but I find myself not caring at all about Dan, Jordan, and Abby. Argh! I wanted to like this book so much and I just don't think I can make myself finish the series. Godspeed to those who can. I would not recommend 'Asylum' or the series based on the two books I've read so far.
