so, it took me a while to fully form my thoughts but here we are. get in losers, we’re ranting about a book!
first, let’s start with the one positive of this book: cal. i already liked him as a character from the previous two books. he’s a deeply layered person with a lot of flaws, but you can’t help root for him and feel for him while he’s struggling with mental health (depression, anxiety, negative self image) and addiction (alchohol and drugs in the past) these things aren’t easy!
okay, now let’s get to the negatives. first up: the length. this book was unnecessarily 600 pages. seriously, no romance should be more than 350 pages max.
the second negative: the entire goddamn town. for real, they were being so mean and condescending to cal for something that happened like 6 years ago and not even to them! they keep calling him pathetic and worthless. they’re making his addiction their personal inconvenience. jfc they all have the personality of an immature karen. even lana, the love interest, is being a total bitch sometimes and just jumps to conclusions. even wyatt, who supposedly also was an addict, is being so rude. every single one of them blames cal for his addiction and not being able to quit. like people bffr. that is exactly what addiction is! there was ZERO sympathy, understanding or help from ANY of them.
third: the freaking miscommunication and jumping to conclusions without even communicating or trying to understand. lana just shuts cal out, time and time again.
fourth: the whole second chance romance just wasn’t giving what it was suppose to give. it was just cal trying to prove himself and offering himself up for lana, while she was being judgemental.
honestly, cal deserves better for himself. if this book was cal alone, it would have been a 4 star for sure. i seriously added a star in my rating just for him. otherwise this would have been 2 stars for me. i scanned the last 25% or so because i wanted it to be done. okay, i guess another positive is cal’s relationship with cami. that was cute. do yourself a favor, and just read the second book. that one was amazing!
