Set in 16th-century Scotland, the story follows Princess Anne, who’s on a year-long trial to prove herself as Queen or face life in a convent. Alongside her is Kirsten, her maid who has her own secrets, and Jura, a runaway housemaid tangled in the witch hunts sweeping the country.
While the multiple points of view of the three women broken up by diary entries and court documents, added an interesting layer, I struggled to connect with the main characters.
Still, the book does a great job highlighting the perilous plight of women during this time.
