Ghost Boy: The Miraculous Escape of a Misdiagnosed Boy Trapped Inside His Own Body by Martin Pistorius

5.0

This book was SO good! I hate to compare, but I read a book similar to Martin’s situation (I believe it was called The Blink of an Eye by Rikke) and I really did not enjoy it. But THIS is what I’m talking about!! There wasn’t any point in this novel that I wasn’t obsessed.

I originally heard about this book before its release date, back in 2013, but I didn’t get the chance to read it. I remember researching Martin’s case and how he was in a coma for almost 15 years (I know - crazy!!), and I was hooked. Only took me eight years, but here I am.

I love love love Martin’s writing and how he describes every aspect of his life. I cannot imagine what he must’ve been going through during his awake years in his coma. Being conscious and understanding everyone & everything, but not being able to communicate it with anyone? And having everyone think you’re still in an unconscious state? It all seems so crazy but that’s exactly what Martin went through. The fact that he came out on top and wrote a whole BOOK about his experience amazes me. After hearing about this I knew I just had to read it. And I’m so glad I did.

I gave this book 5 stars. It’s classified as a religious/spirituality book, and although Martin does reference God a couple of times, I definitely didn’t find it overwhelming and it did not take away from the actual content. I was a little weary of that before picking it up, since I’m not religious myself, but it wasn’t anything that ruined my reading experience.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a good memoir, I’d definitely recommend this one! The chapters are super short so it’s really easy to fly through.
