The Haunted Bridge by Carolyn Keene
These Nancy Drew books are my version of a cozy mystery! I love the predictability and consistency in structure and plots. The familiarity is so comforting and pairing that with nostalgia is truly a special experience.
The escapism these novels bring both to adults, YA, and even juvenile readers is really special. It’s a safe place that doesn’t exist in a lot of literature anymore, and I think that’s one reason it seems so timeless. The characterization of Nancy being so admirable- she’s so brave, willing to try anything new or take on any daunting task, she’s intelligent and witty, and she’s so determined- is what every young girl dreams of. The convenient mystery is an excellent bonus too!
#15 “The Haunted Bridge” is particularly eerie with ghost-sightings and ghoulish screams. Plus it features popular characters like Bess and George, Ned, Burt, and Dave too! If you know any young girls who love to golf, this story has some really neat elements of taking place during a golf tournament and like most everything else, Nancy also excels at golfing. She also gets an opportunity to prove her integrity, honesty, and perseverance as she solves this crazy mystery of jewel thieves, a missing treasure, spooky spirits, and a dangerous bridge. The golf elements were a little dry and lingering for me, but for someone interested in the sport, this could be really interesting and intriguing. I wouldn’t say this is one of my favorite ones, but it’s certainly still enjoyable!
