Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett
4.0
The last Witches novel in the Discworld series grabs you by the throat, just like the title says. When the Magpyr family of vampires comes to take over Lancre, they test the skills of Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick, and Agnes Nitt/Perdita. Meanwhile Granny Weatherwax is nowhere to be found.
Pratchett satirizes vampire fiction, drawing from both literature and film. Some of it is very clever and amusing, but sometimes the descriptions of the characters and their strengths and weaknesses get repetitive and you find yourself saying,"Ok yes, we get it." and wishing things would just move on. On the plus side, there are some delightful new characters, significant character development for some of our returning favourites, and the final battle is truly epic.
