It read as upper ya fantasy (with a hint of a romance subplot), not bad at all but not something that I enjoy reading anymore. 
(I thought it was going to be a fantasy romance but it ended up being a fantasy book so the pacing as a slower, the world building a bit more complex and political. So I dnfed, but it wasn't bad).
