The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

5.0

I absolutely LOVED this book - and it’s truly a testament to it that I loved it so much even though I’m still in a mild reading slump!

This book is so inventive, I’ve never read anything remotely similar, and the concept worked so well and was so well executed! The plot was fast paced and exciting, but the world (multi-verse?) building was also detailed and interesting, and the magic(?) system was so cool! I loved learning about this world, and I was so invested in this story, and the villain was so interesting!

I love love love the characters in here, each was so fleshed out and interesting. They all felt unique and flawed, and I loved learning about them. Also, the diversity was great in here; multiple lgbt+ characters and a mostly POC cast of all ages? Fab!

I’m very British, and knew nothing about New York going into this book, and it truly wasn’t confusing at all. I feel like if you know New York, you’ll love this book because it’s obviously full of love for the city, but is also accessible to people like me who know nothing, so that was great.

Overall, big fan of this book. Can’t wait for the next one in the trilogy!
