Deep End by Ali Hazelwood
5.0
what. drugs. does. she. use? damn.
If you’ve been following me for a while then you know about my love for Ali Hazelwood’s books(more like obsession if we’re being honest). My addiction with her books stems from a variety of micro tropes, details, and things like character just to name a few. Deep End was my most anticipated release yet and it did not disappoint. Trying to express to you what this book did for me is impossible and everything I say pales in comparison.
Deep End is a college romance between two competitive athletes, a diver and a swimmer, who on the surface seem to not have anything in common and a quick fling turns into smooch more then they could’ve expected.
Deep End is part of what I like to call “Ali but more” which is something that started when she wrote Bride, which was a different genre but romance and grew into more with Not In Love. It’s not her usual rom-com with light fluffy romance. I say it’s darker but that just means it’s not a fluffy rom-com. She’s been branching out with her writing and it’s working perfectly for her. Deep End continues to prove that.
One of the things I love about Ali is the depth of what she writes when it comes to her characters and their thing. For the first few books it was STEM, then Chess with her YA debut, then again STEM and now competitive diving and swimming. It’s something that always gives the much more oomph to the story and the characters.
I loved Scarlett so much. She’s troubled, fighting with inner and outer problems, and she hilarious with a witty humor. I loved being in her head and with her all throughout the book. Her getting over her fears both in her sport and her personal life. Her with Lukas and that part she only shares with him.
Now to say I loved Scarlett and Lukas together is an understatement. I loved Lukas’ deadpan humor and personality. He was–to put it lightly–obsessed with Scarlett. Worshipped the grown she walked on. I couldn’t love him more for it. The way Ali wrote and evolved their relationship was a masterpiece of tease, long seducing glances, with what I think was some of the best chemistry she’s written yet. The s*x!!! This book is her spiciest to date, and she said “I’ll make it the best.” The way she wrote their power exchange and play, the consent in those scenes, that in it self was incredible. I think she did an amazing job at writing and portraying the kink in the relationship between Scarlett and Lukas.
