Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

I was most of the way through this book when a friend of mine corrected my understanding about this series:

I thought this book was the middle of a trilogy. This is inaccurate. Words of Radiance is the second book in a series that's apparently going to be 10 books long, broken up into 2 arcs.

Put in perspective, all three of the first books take no fewer than 45 hours to listen to. I get the feeling they broke up the narration between authors simply for the sake of time.

And the absolute rub, the utterly infuriating part is I think I'm fully invested at this point. I've spent so much time with these characters that it's hard not to feel pretty significantly invested. And Sanderson is so consistent with his world building that it's almost guaranteed to have mysteries that get real answers and a genuine ending after all the conflict.

It's almost hard to say anything substantive about this particular book. It's not a beginning, it's not an ending, and this is clearly the series where Sanderson intends to indulge his every whim, explore every nook and cranny, and above all, take his time. So this is less like me reviewing the book report and more like me writing an update on a book that, by its completion, may very well take up an entire bookstore shelf in hardback.
