I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom by Jason Pargin

3.5

i was super hyped for this as a long time jdate fan but this really did not hit as hard as i thought it would.

the idea of it is great, so is the cover and title, but mostly it felt repetitive in its message on how the internet is bad — if it had been dialled down by 40% my rating would’ve probably been a lot higher. but as it is, it felt mostly like you were doomscrolling on twitter for far too long watching insane internet fights with no meaning (and it would’ve felt more meaningful if pargin didn’t spend every page hitting us in the head with the point on how we need to get off the internet. like i agree, but still).

anyway, it did still have pargin’s familiar writing style and humour. less then loveable characters, but which he still manages to make you like, and so it isn’t the worst book. but it’s not my favourite either.
