Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant

4.0

This ticked a number of my favorite boxes. Monster horror, likable characters, a fun mystery, scary things happening that make my toes curl. Though not completely permeating the piece, there are several scenes, specifically with the women in the water, that made me want to bunch up into a ball of discomfort.

When I was a kid, I used to close my eyes in the pool and imagine something grabbing my ankle and pulling me down. That type of fear I felt then is what Rolling in the Deep makes me feel.

I love the fact that a good amount of the science stuff in here isn't absolute nonsense. It gives realistic reasons for killer mermaids to exist.

My only gripe is that some of the characters bled together a little bit, but other than that, this is a fantastic little novella. Read it if you can.
