This Is How You Lose The Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar

5.0

⚠️ Spoiler alert: Skip the second paragraph that outlines the plot if you want to jump into this without spoilers.

This is a story you don't read or listen to, but one that you feel. I've never seen prose that sounded as poetic as in this book and I hope many others will reach out to experience it.

In a world where time travel is used to steer timeliness by two opposing sides at war, the Agency, representing technology, and the Garden, representing nature, two time-travelling individuals, red and blue start as enemies trying to trick and outsmart each other, but then develop a strong love which draws them closer and away from their original missions.

For me, this was a short, powerful, and emotional read, just as beautiful as I had expected. It had a dreamlike quality, where I enjoyed the story without completely understanding it, so I believe a good chunk of it is also shaped by the mind of the reader, which might make is a different experience each time you read it. This is the first book I've finished that I'm already looking forward to reading again.
