It Starts with Us by Colleen Hoover
1.0
If you had asked me after I read It Ends With Us if I would ever read another Colleen Hoover again, I would've laughed until I cried. Alas. Anything for a project.
This time, it was reading the top 5 most-read books of 2023, according to Goodreads. Full thoughts here.
In a lot of ways, this felt like a pointed response to a lot of the criticisms that It Ends With Us got, and yet somehow, it was just as uncomfortable. Hoover's writing and approach to plot are genuinely terrible. She has no sense of progression or escalation and instead bops you repeatedly over the head with trauma-dumps and twists.
I'll never understand why this woman has the reading world bamboozled.
