Bull by David Elliott
3.0
This only took me about 45 mins at my desk to power through. A mixed bag, certainly. I am always on the lookout for new Greek Myth retellings because we have so many kids who have exhausted Rick Riordan's back catalogue. I also liked the way this kept the darkness of the original myth intact without becoming too grim. That being said - I'm not sure who Elliott envisioned as the reader for this. By all accounts, the language and format are really accessible, but it goes really hard on the swearing to a point where I can't actually give this to younger readers, which is a shame because otherwise its exactly what I'm looking for.
I thought the idea of using different metres for different characters was interesting and well-executed, particularly through Ariadne and Asterion. However, Poseidon completely wrecked this reading experience for me. His character is so embarrassingly goofy - very "My name is Poseidon and I'm here to say..." etc. His cartoon villain persona was enormously grating and took me right out of it. Would certainly be interested to hear this performed.
