Nothing like a good old book by Ali Hazelwood to get the brain going and your heart rate up as well. From the opening pages, I was immediately transported into Bee’s world and felt like I was along for the ride… the ride of Bee trying to girl boss her way while working with NASA, and trying to deal with her arch nemesis, Levi Ward. From the workplace, lots of scientific innovations and vocabulary to the building tension between Bee and Levi, this book was fun, lighthearted, and left me wanting to read what was going to happen next.
Once again, I’m not much of a scientific person, science was never my strong suit while I was in school, but I did appreciate learning about the work that Bee was working on while developing the helmet that the astronauts would use during the BLINK project. Ali was a way of combing the world of science and romance and comedy all into one to create an enjoyable story and lovable character who made me laugh and more.
Bee was a sassy, and positive person who was trying to make moves in the workplace, while also dealing with her horrible boss at NIH, and always having to deal with the predominantly male environment. Bee was no stranger to men in the workplace either making sexist comments to her or having a pervy, horrible boss such as, Trevor. Bee was a girl boss in her own right and the way she was able to point out things especially with the project she was working on or setting things straight with Levi, I was proud of her for speaking her mind.
Before reading this book, I imagined Bee and Levi being at total odds with each other such as, arguing, not liking each other, and butting heads while co-leading the project they were assigned. Once I started reading though, it seemed more that Bee assumed based off of Levi’s behavior and attitude that he must have automatically hated her since grad school, and yet with Levi trying to help Bee to make sure she got the necessary equipment she needed, making sure the other engineers listened to her, and even saving her yet again when being locked in at the cemetery, it seemed like Levi didn’t hate her at all. I will say, it got a little annoying how much Bee would constantly remind Levi that he must hate her a lot and must not like being around her, and again Levi would always tell her that wasn’t the case. In Bee’s defense, through the years at PITT and being reunited while working in Houston, I guess for Bee she just couldn’t help but think that Levi didn’t like her at all.
I will say that something about Levi’s cool and calm demeanor was attractive to me, as well as how he could switch into being authoritative in the workplace while also maintaining a respectable air to him. I especially loved seeing how flustered Levi got whenever he was around Bee. Not to mention, the way Levi was protective of Bee and making sure she was ok especially due to her fainting and making sure she was comfortable at all times. We love a fictional man who is both intelligent and kind hearted.
Now while this story was more focused on the scientific side of what Levi and Bee did for their project in BLINK, the romance in this book was great. I would say, the first half of the book was a lot of misunderstandings and tension between Levi and Bee. Then the second half which was my favorite was when Levi and Bee actually started up their romance or in Bee’s words a something with benefits and she was enjoying it. I could tell that Bee was still hesitant on actually having a relationship with Levi due to her past in being cheated on or feeling like everything comes to an end. Levi was patient and understanding when it came to Bee’s needs, and oh boy did I lose my mind when I got to THAT PART where Levi and Bee were having *wink, wink fun in the bedroom! IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW! AHHHHHH SO FREAKING GOOD! Alas, a friendly reminder that don’t judge a book by its cover because, in Bee’s instance, she assumed Levi would have been reserved in matters of the bedroom…. GIRL SHE WAS WRONG BECAUSE LEVI WAS STRAIGHT UP VOCAL AND WORSHIPING BEE! WOOOO!
Overall, this was a fantastic book, and I loved everything about it. I don’t read a lot of academia books, but this was another home run for Ali. I loved Bee and Levi’s chemistry and romance. The conflict towards the end was unexpected but great, and the ending was so sweet and fitting for Levi and Bee. The epilogue was perfect for Levi and Bee, and I cannot get over the amount of times I was blushing and squealing like a teenager over the romance and little spicy moments haha. Great story, funny, lovable characters, and amazing look into the world of STEM.
