Wow this book was stunning and brilliant. Leigh absolutely nailed a standalone, and these characters felt so unique from what she's previously done. I also think this was her most Jewish book yet, even though Luiza was forced to hide her identity throughout the story. I actually listened to this on audio and I felt like it helped bring the world to life. This was dark for sure, but coming from Leigh, I'm not all that surprised. I loved the mix of historical elements with fantasy, magical realism, and even a little bit of romance. There was something so lyrical about the writing too that easily swept me away. I loved the use of different languages as well. The ending was fantastic and was the perfect way to do a singular book. Will I read anything Leigh writes? Yes, but it helps if it's incredible like this one.
