The Examiner by Janice Hallett

3.0

Like when I read 'The Appeal', I completely lapped up this book in a matter of days - I've never felt so powerful reading so quickly. And I do feel that, like a very small percentage of the readership of this book, I got an extra layer out of this densely plotted mystery because the university it's set at is mimicked on Royal Holloway, University of London, where I not only did my BA, but also studied the same MA as the author (only thirteen years later). So I could picture the EXACT building that I think the artists studio is based on, having spent four years of my life going in and out of it.

As for the book itself, as I thought with The Appeal, it just dragged on a smidge too long for me. Sometimes the minutia of the messages and emails can get a little dry, but you know it's all part of the build up to discovering the truth. Nevertheless, this is a thrilling mystery with so much rich inner detail that you'll be guessing right up until the final page.
