The World We Found by Thrity Umrigar

Lovely novel, not usually my kind of subject, but I loved the way the writing plunges you into its atmosphere, the way the characters' voices are so different, and the moral complexity of the whole work.
It's a look at India, at different ways of living one's lives there, the struggles and hopes of young people and how they evolve when you grow up, and even if it deals with very dark subjects - rape, racism, religious extremism, cancer - it still manages to stay light, and above all full of hope.
I was afraid at first that Iqbal would be an all-black character, but I was amazed by the way the author manages to give him good reasons for his behaviour, for the way he treats wife and sister - you can definitely understand why he is like that! - and yet never makes excuses for him or acts like these are good justifications for what he is doing. And Adish doesn't get a pass for his actions at the end either.
I really loved the ending, although in a way it felt like something was missing too? I don't really know how I feel about it, because seeing the reunion with Armaiti might have been awkward, and perhaps it's better to be left with their hopes and dreams for that meeting, and also not knowing how long Armaiti still has left. On the other hand, the whole book tended towards that meeting, so it is weird to not get to see it. But the last note being on Nishta's freedom was probably the best and most satisfying ending we could've had.
