The Hedge Witch by Colleen Delaney
2.0
Let me start by saying, I was immediately captivated by the story of the five Bay sisters, their lives on their little star island, and how they wield their powers in their daily lives. However, I couldn't help but feel let down that the plot primarily revolved around Laurel, relegating the other four sisters to the sidelines and reducing them to shallow, one-dimensional secondary characters.
The pace of the story could be more balanced. The whole book's second half was too long. Still, I wasn't disappointed by the "plot twist." The third-act conflict with the love interest was ridiculous and based on very weak arguments. The climax of the story only lasted a few pages, which was anti-climactic since everything that happened during that part happened too quickly and too easily.
As a reader, I would have appreciated a deeper delve into each of the sisters' lives. A series less focused on one sister per book (clearly as it is envisioned) could have provided a more engaging narrative, allowing us to appreciate each sister's unique powers and personalities fully. The excessive use of the term soulmate, over and over again has turned it into a rather ridiculous and insipid term.
