The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

5.0

Delightfully spooky and discomfiting, The Haunting of Hill House is a classic for a reason. Jackson draws inspiration from Gothic literature but breathes modern sensibilities into it, with nods to shifting 1950s norms of gender and relationships, and key parts of the mystery left to readers' imaginations. The way that Eleanor's time in the house shifts between happiness and terror felt perfectly done. And I loved the cast of characters, from the main team of paranormal researchers to the darkly hilarious supporting characters like Mrs. Montague and Mrs. Dudley.
