Re-read Review November '17:
A wonderful re-read.
I love how much this book is a step up from the first one, and how the characters are build and made so much better in this book!
I also love how the plot develops, where the story is taken and that it doesn't have the typical "YA" fantasy feel, but has things happen that are darker and not necessary something you would expect to happen in this type of book -people get tortured, killed, lose what they love, fight, survive or die - but i think the mixture of those darker aspect and the lighter and easier going friend/family moments are almost perfect!
What i still HATED?
The sex stuff. I really love Maas' writing, she is a wonderful writer and i think we still have a lot of wonderful stories coming our way from her. BUT she can NOT write sex scenes and i wish she would stop adding those into her books!
Overall?
I love the details, the build up, the development in both plot and characters!
Its a great book and i had the best time re-reading this book (and partly listen to it on audiobook which was great to have a much slower read through)
And now i really can't wait to see what the next book will over to the story!
First read: May '16:
First of: The title. Can we talk about it? Am i the only one that doesn't really understand it?
Why is it called the Mist and Fury? Why not the Court of Mist and Steamy?
Court of Mist and Sex? Court of "Holy hell there is a lot of sexy times in this book!"?
Or Court of Spring sucks and Night rocks? Pun intended.
Is that a spoiler? If so sorry, but i am based, since i didn't like Tamlin since he first turned up in the first book, and at the first few pages of this book he did NOT chance my mind! And i loved Rhysand since he first appeared in ACoFaR, so really its not a spoiler!
Lets focus and start with the characters and come back to my recommended other titles after that and focus first on Feyre, Tamlin and wonderful Rhysand!
And since i am already raving about the beauty that is Rhysand, can i please the the order form for one of my own?
Pretty please?
This book just made me completely and utterly fall in love with that guy.
I mean there were a few slightly over dramatized moments -in my option!- all those confessions of why he did things and how he did things and the moments where he explained himself even thought Feyre clearly completely overreacted and behaved like hers stupid self of the first book instead of the slightly smarter version of this one! so really but other then that, i loved Rhysand. And i want him to come in a cloud of darkness to take me away! Right now, please. I swear i be all kinds of good!
Anyways... other then the perfection characterized Rhysand, Feyre actually shaped up in this book. I really hated her in the first one. I mean HATED in capitalized letters!!
That girl was so stupid i wanted to bash her head in because she just! She frustrated me in a way that very, very few characters ever managed in my reader years. So clearly point for Maas since she is the master of writing characters that you wish were actual flesh and blood just so that you can try to kill them for being so stupid.
I swear i am not a psychopath. Or a murderer. Mostly thanks to the fact that book characters are not actual real people, but hey that still counts as i swear i am not actually violent in real life! I am a itty bitty tame cute little kitten. Okay lets focus back on the importance of this book and just try to tame my need for violence on/with/for the characters of Maas' books.
Feyre... she behaved utterly stupid and moronic in book one. But in this one? I mean she started out pretty similar and i do have to say i was inclined to put the book down in the first 50 or 60 pages or so if she would have continued on in that way because honestly? A completely stupid having main girl? So not my favorite kind of read!
But she shaped up! And boy if she managed to keep her head on her shoulders and not in someone else's ass? that girl is a force of some kind!
I loved how she evolved throughout the story and how she managed to become something more and better -which is not a spoilers!- and evolve and learn and just shape up into a character that can be seen in slight glances in the first 50 or so pages in this book and a few spare moments in the first book.
So that was all fantastic! I love if a character really does evolve into something that is gnatasticlly great and something that i can love. And Feyre clearly did just that. Which i never expected so there was also the entire surprise moment for that going on in this book!
Tamlin on the other hand was just as murder worthy in this book as i felt he was in the first book. and i kind of love that Feyre finally also saw that she only fell in love with the first guy/person that actually pretend to care for her and that she actually saw that yes, Tamlin only pretend to care for her and love her since what he did to her and let her do for him was not actually something that should be happening in a health and love guided relationship. So big, big point to Maas for letting a character notice that they were in a repressing and maybe even slightly abusing relationship and do something productive about it!
I also loved that the end was as it was with Tamlin behaving so utterly stupid as i always felt he was and really showing everyone what a jackass he really is! And how Rhysand and Feyre could foresee that and work against it without a problem- but i kind of got a bit off on the topic there again so sorry.
Enough about the stupid that is Tamlin and lets talk about Lucien, shall we?
Who wants to join the group of lets help Lucien find himself again?
I mean i loved him in the first book because he was sassy and did what he thought was right even if it completely gone against Tamlin or his wishes and just did what he thought he should be doing.
Also the sass. Did i mention the sass that he possessed in the first book? Because he kind of made the book with his sassy sarcastic comments for me!
I mean i know that maas did it on purpose to clearly make it easier for Feyre to leave the Spring court to join Rhysand and with that push the entire story plot into happening, but where the heck went THAT Lucien? He can't just do everything -no matter how stupid he must have thought Tamlin was behaving- Tamlin wants from him simply because Lucien things that he has to show the entire Court that he is still firmly on Tamlins side. Not if that is not typical for him and how he behaves right? Do i see that wrong? Why would a person suddenly be this perfect servant when he never was before? Anyone that knew Lucien before should expect some resistance for stupid orders and unnecessary things and a bit of a fight back for things that Lucien things Tamlin is wrong about right? And even if not, why didn't he at least help Feyre and warn her against the Priestess since he clearly did not have anything nice to say about her. Why let Feyre -who he liked in book one right? did just imagine that?- in the hands of a person that he completely mistrusts? Makes no sense to me at all.
So Lucien in this book? Deserved a swift slap across the head. With a frying pan - Tangled style!
Just to make sure that the stuff that might be left in his head is still functioning. And if not thing else a good shake up there might redirect his brain functions.
I am not even going to start talking about that priestess person. The rant will never end.
Once again points for Maas to writing a character that i want to strangle! (and again i swear i am mild tempered in real life!)
Lets instead talk about the wonderful people of the night court shall we? Because i love them all.
Every single person!
I mean not the Nightmare people, those can stay where they want to rot, but Rhysand's friends/court people? Love them. Every one of them. I want them in my life as well! They are wonderful and great and just... so lovable!
Enough raving/ranting about the characters, lets get back to the not children friendly moments now.
Because there were so many more then i expected. I mean wow. I actually really enjoy reading YA because of the non existing sex scenes. Mostly because i do not see the sense in characters constantly having sex. Not because it is something that i feel unfomrotable about or don't see the need ir anything like that but lets just be honest. is it really necessary in the -honestly- most stupid moments for two people to have very badly and messily descriped sex in every book written?
I think not.
So the amount of sex? What was it four, five? Or six times? Not sure. A lot more then i expected. And a bit more graphic then i found strictly necessary mostly because ehonsetly as much as i love Maas's writing? Sex scenes? Not necessary her best writing work.
I think at least. Because i don't think that the reader is supposed to giggle or full out laugh at the descriptions given during them?
I mean if that was her intend, kudos! That worked. If not, yeah maybe the next book a little less of that stuff? And more sarcastically sassy moments instead?
But i felt a bit like she was trying to write this:
and actually did this:
(i was reed, completely unsure if i wanted to turn away, laugh out loud, close the book and at the same time the train wreck just keep you reading!)
Maybe that was just me.
But overall?
This book was fantastic. Wonderful. Great.
I loved it.
I loved at least 98% of it i mean.
I didn't love the start but the ending? So made up for it in the biggest way that i might had happy tears in my eyes. Maybe. Shh. Lets just not mention that!
the writing was a glorious, the characters all outstanding even those that i hated -or maybe especially those since it takes talent to write characters that you want to kill!- the plot magnificent and even thought the big final fight thing was once again just slightly lacking -in my option!- the overall storyline the fights and moments?
This book overall was such a fantastically marvelous, magnificent, superb, spectacular thing of beauty!
I want my own personal Rhysand delivered as soon as possible, if possible with the third book of this series. Thanks.
This book surprised me, made me laugh, want to scream, rip it apart and hug it endlessly while performing happy dances that should not be performed!
So really, what more do you want from a book?
I really recommend this book, especially if you are unsure about the first one! it is worth reading the first book just to read this beauty! Go on, do it! What are you waiting for?
