Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths by Natalie Haynes

5.0

Classicist and stand-up comedian Natalie Haynes brilliantly summarizes the stories of ten women from Greek mythology, offering feminist critique and highlighting differing ancient and contemporary interpretations. I was already familiar with Haynes' take on many of these characters from her podcast Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics but appreciated the deeper dive and more extensive range of comparisons. In the chapter on the Amazons, for example, Haynes doesn't only compare classical ancient sources with the representation of Wonder Woman, but also discusses how Buffy and her friends compare to these mythological warrior women.

Through the book we learn about how women were viewed in Ancient Greece as well as what the lenses on these stories say about how our society views women today. Overall this is a great starting point for someone with a background in classics to learn more about feminist ways of reading the myths, or for feminists to learn a bit more about the classics.
