In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom by Maryanne Vollers, Yeonmi Park

5.0

Honestly, I can't even review this in my typical "What I Liked" and "What I Didn't Like" format. There was nothing I didn't like.

Yeonmi is an extraordinary writer. For someone who had second grade literacy a few years ago, she writes poetry with her personal stories. She captures North Korea in both beauty and terror and haunting reality... after I finished this book, I looked up the interviews of Yeonmi that have made her famous. Her words are striking - if anyone can bring justice to North Korea, Yeonmi can... and she will be at the forefront of the human rights movement there.

Her stories about coming to Christianity and seeing the good (and the bad) sides of this religion for the first time in her life were also beautiful and fascinating.

I would recommend this to anyone.
