The Boat People by Sharon Bala

5.0

4.5 stars

A breathtaking, powerful read about human suffering, and impossible decisions. More timely than ever, this book tears a hole into Canada’s portrayal as a country where all are welcome, and all are treated the same. Based on the true story of the cargo ship that brought 492 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees to Canada - The Boat People shows us a different side of Canada, where, instead of being welcomed with open arms, they faced fear, discrimination, and months in detention. Sharon Bala weaves a beautiful story about immigration, displacement, belonging, fear, and hatred - posing the question: Is history doomed to repeat itself?

I enjoyed all three perspectives - but I did feel like there was something missing from Grace’s narratives. I feel like, as a reader, we need a bit more of a background/context from her - because her motivations didn’t always make sense. Priya’s character could have been more fleshed out as well. The three different characters tied in the story really well though - I thought it was a powerful story - AND well written.

The Boat People packs an emotional punch - and is a must read for all Canadians.
