Orange 6 by Ichigo Takano

3.0

Rating this series at a solid 3.5 stars with a tendency towards 4 stars. It didn't knock my socks off, but I genuinely appreciated the different route the author took with a schooltime love story. The "be there for your mentally ill friends" message was a bit... shallow, in my opinion. Of course, we are talking about a romance manga here - a genre, which, at it's core always has some miscommunication tropes and melodrama - so it may not be fully right to criticize the bluntness and naiveté of the characters. I remember enjoying the anime, though I have since forgotten whether the ending differs from the manga. The characters were loveable and I wish we could have spent some more time with the supporting cast, as they all could have been fleshed out a bit more. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the general message and tone, and a heavy topic was handled in an honest and kind way.
