Illuminating the Magic: An Ugly Duckling Retelling by Ashley Mendoza

adventurous emotional hopeful lighthearted medium-paced

4.25

This is an ugly duckling retelling that follows Princess Lyra, an outcast in her family, hidden away from her Kingdom, and shunned for having useless illusion magic, when everyone else has power over the elements.
She just wants one night of fun with her friends so she sneaks out to the masquerade ball enjoying her freedom until her Kingdom is invaded by a powerful necromancer.
Now on the run with her 2 friends and guard, they must flee to their allies and hope the necromancer doesn't find them.
After years of neglect, being told she is worthless, and her magic ridiculed, Lyra can't understand why she is being hunted, until her magic begins to change. Now she has to push aside all the years of doubt and believe in herself to save the Kingdoms, and reclaim her family's throne.
It explores her emotional turmoil from all the unexpected responsibilities thrown her way, and the conflict she has in accepting her new role. There is also emotional conflict as she falls for her friend, but his family are against it.
It explores faith and blessings, and accepting your true self despite what others think which was wholesome.
It's an epic YA adventure and coming of age fantasy, with high stakes, good v evil battles, and
I liked the open ending, as it sets the scene that there could be more to come.
