The Bomb: Presidents, Generals, and the Secret History of Nuclear War by Fred Kaplan

5.0

Excellent book on nuclear policy-making at the highest levels. More than the usual focuses on nuclear crises like the Cuban Missile Crisis, etc, this covers the long arguments about what sort of strategic doctrines would prevail—often as a means to an end of preserving some nuclear program or another. A great companion to Ellsberg’s The Doomsday Machine, and a pretty brisk and approachable read. Highly recommended!
