We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter

5.0

I first heard about this book was when Anne Bogel interviewed the author on The What Should I Read Next Podcast, episode 157. And I was so fascinated about reading about a family that all survived the holocaust. And having that knowledge going into this book made the reading experience so much more nuanced and rich. Every time a scene happened where something just seemed too good to be true, I had to remind myself that these things actually happened. There is one scene in particular that I think an editor would have tweaked to be different if it wasn’t based on the truth because it seems too extraordinarily lucky. I loved the way the story was structured and how it moved along so smoothly going forward while incorporating so many people and places.

I know that WW2 books are so popular, but I find them so inspiring, especially those based on fact. It is one of the darkest times in our history, but the stories of people who were strong and brave and kind in the midst of horror are so important to reflect on.
