The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson
5.0
Johnson has a way with pacing; it is the perfect unfurling of events, the perfect hinge for the narrative. I was floored, and immediately handed my copy to a friend, sitting next to me in the car.
I want to think of a deeper thing to say about the book, but I'll need a few nights to let the story's effect on me settle. It was that kind of work. Subtle. Powerful. A satisfying inversion, finding a new frame with Lovecraft.
