The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

5.0

A classic that definitely holds up to the hype. This book has been on my to-read shelf for a while, and now that I've finally gotten around to it I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The writing, stylistically, was beautiful in that old-timey way that I love while still being accessible. In fact, I basically flew through the final chapter because I was so engaged in the narrative—not necessarily a rarity, but certainly an accomplishment for an older tale (especially one whose "twist" has been spoiled for nearly everyone and is as a result explained on the book's back cover).

The rumination on the duality of man that came at the end was gripping, and even knowing the plot ahead of time I'll admit that I was still genuinely spooked by the horror contained within those last few pages. After a fairly short read, I expect I'll be thinking about this one for a while to come.
