After being an avid first book hater because of really unhealthy things being depicted..and bias.
(NOT what other people have said about "you just gotta get through the world building". I hadn't found it slow, I found it dangerous.)
I was pleasantly surprised this book actually addressed these concerns. The dangerous aspects had actual substance and purpose, and were not shied away from for discussion. The relationship feels earned, healthy even.
Was it an easy, fun, sometimes camp read? Absolutely.
I liked it more than I thought I would, though not enough to immediately read the rest of the series without a break.
