The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

Wow. I have never read the full original Homeric recounting of the Battle of Troy, or of Achilles. This was a fantastic modern language retelling of Achilles and that war, from the perspective of his close friend Patroclus. This story leans into the subtextual romance from the original The Illiad and makes it fully textual. Patroclus and Achilles are passionately in love with each other, and I believe it, and am here for it. Their love for each other is their greatest strength, but also their weakness that ends in their downfall. This book had many great lines, many epic moments, and all the heroic pomp and vain hubris I could ask for. I am glad I read it.
