This was bizarre.

It started off uncomfortable and only got stranger as it went on. There was a strong message about conformity and societal expectations that really resonated with me. There was also a part of the book that portrayed how children are often treated as second class citizens in societies and how they are full dependent on adults to fulfill their needs, for protection, and for justice. While the book was falling off the rails a bit to me towards the end, I really think the messages that were portrayed earlier on in the story left enough of an impression for me to give this 5 stars.

I wanted to protect Natsuki from her family, from the teacher, from the world, and from herself. But I was happy she found her community lol.

This book was not at all subtle and had a similar message to that of Convenience Store Woman with much less palatable content. I could not, in good conscience, recommend this book to anyone without listing all of the trigger warnings because this book was graphic and bizarre.

But I did enjoy it.
