Update: with time to calm down from my own emotional reaction to this book, I’m upgrading my rating. McCurdy has done a great job telling a story absolutely worthy of a memoir. Do check the content warnings and look after yourself though! See below my initial review:
I knew that in order for a book to be titled ‘I’m glad my Mom Died’ the mother would have to be pretty awful but ooft I’m so disappointed in McCurdy’s mother and also every other adult in her life that didn’t protect her from that. This is a celebrity memoir from someone who has lived a tough enough life for there to be something to talk about and she does so with raw honesty and clarity. I’m glad she has been able to take control of her narrative in this way and I wish her success in her non-acting endeavours. I do think this book probably should have had more trigger warnings, because I was not expecting eating disorders to make up such a large portion of the book, and I may have chosen not to read it if I had known. Ultimately I don’t really like reading sad books, and I have enough mental health experiences to happily never engage with them again, but I can understand why others are leaving positive reviews on this one.
