Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh

4.0

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For the first time in forever, he was stunned to silence. Not by her words, but by the tenderness in her hands, the worry in her eyes. He was an archangel. He’d been wounded far, far worse and shrugged it off. But then, there had been no woman with sun kissed by the sunset and eyes of storm gray to tear into him for daring to get himself hurt.

Archangel's Consort marks the end of Elena and Raphael's trilogy [correction; they come back as protagonists in later books and the overarching plot is still connected to them], and naturally, the stakes are at its highest.

A greater threat may be reawakening that could reshape the world and unsettle the Cadre of Ten.

While Elena and Raphael are still navigating through the dynamics of their unique relationship, they must account for the enemies to that plan to tear them apart at any opportune moment.

Both Elena and Raphael's pasts are shrouded in mystery, especially Raphael's. I'm glad we explored more of Raphael's past and surprisingly there's more to Elena's own past than what I have guessed.

They are polar opposites with similar traumas that helped them open up to each other.

And I truly appreciate how Nalini navigated through their relationship since it's reasonable to expect a power imbalance between an immortal and a mortal (at heart). Raphael is an Archangel who lives for more than a millennia and has exercised power and authority at his own whim, so he does put in the work to rein in that sense of power to not scare or intimidate Elena. On the other hand, Elena understands that her partner is an Immortal but that doesn't mean she wouldn't challenge him and put her foot down. There is mutual respect and a passionate love that radiates between them.

Content warnings: this book features mature and somewhat dark themes and includes graphic violence, death, grief.
