I received a free copy of this book for review. This does not affect my opinions or rating.

I DNF’d this book at 45% after several attempts to read it. While I liked the idea of the story and that it connected to The Little Mermaid, I just couldn’t stay engaged. Here are the reasons I decided to stop reading:

- I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. The main character and her love interest were basically Mary Sue and Gary Stu, particularly the love interest. He was rich, had a sports car, played guitar and was gorgeous, confident and kind. Meaning he was a fantasy guy and not real in the slightest.

- Lia, the MC, sounded very juvenile. I remember being her age and having more of a personality that wasn’t just whining about high heels and obsessing over a boy. I cared about other things. She was written like a silly teenage girl stereotype.

- Adding to that, she was just stupid. She did things, saying she had no choice, but she did have other options. I couldn’t buy into the story because I couldn’t get myself to believe that her options were limited to Doing Nothing or Doing Something Stupid And Reckless.

So that’s that! I know a lot of other people enjoyed this, but I decided I was better off stopping halfway through than forcing myself to read something that wasn’t clicking for me.
