Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery

4.0

Returning to the AofGG series again. There’s just something about Anne—esp the first book—that evokes warm memories of discovering the joy/escape of reading. Anne of Avonlea is not as good as the first book, mostly because it feels like Montgomery is trying to hit all the same notes from the previous narrative. There are substitute Annes (one mischievous adopted boy, one 11 year old imaginative dreamer). Anne doesn’t fall off a roof but she does fall through one. She doesn’t accidentally dye her hair but does dye her nose red (the lesson about vanity is the same). The story focuses quite a bit on romance and marriage—as if setting the stage for Anne’s eventual romance plot. Or maybe Montgomery hoped to avoid marrying Anne off by developing addition love/marriage stories. Good effort, L.M. but the readers will win this battle!
