Day of Ascension by Adrian Tchaikovsky
2.0
There are a lot of nice ideas here, but, as with Children of Time, the book never really delivers on its premise (the protrayal of how the cultists view the more alien members of their congregation in particular felt unfortunately perfunctory), and the characters do not feel real.
Beyond this, the book has an odd issue in that the writing does not really gel with the Black Library style - There are a fair few odd metaphors, similes, and turns of phrase in the first half of the book which do not feel like they fit with the world, and then in the second half of the book the writing feels like it is almost subsumed by the Black Library style, crushing out anything unique Adrian Tchaikovsky brings (aside from hard science/soft science pettiness) - It feels like the editing was never quite pitched at the right level.
