Of Friction by S.J. Lee

5.0

I must admit that I generally have a hard time reading science fiction due to comprehension issues. However, I have been diving deeper into the genre and was excited to read Of Friction when Pride Book Tours offered me a spot. Strong women and slow-burn queer relationships? Yes please! I was also intrigued by the dystopian angle, being an author of a dystopian novel myself.

Normally, when I begin reading a science fiction novel, it takes me a bit to get into the story. But that was not the case with Of Friction at all. Lee's writing, while complex, is also easy to understand and immediately pulled me into the story. The characters were bold and vibrant, and the glossary in the back helped me to fully embrace all of the concepts.

The fact that Of Friction is Lee's debut novel is beyond impressive. She created a story that is as character centered as it is plot driven, and she took the reader by the hand and led them through the story in such a beautiful way. Of Friction is such an excellently crafted book and heartfelt queer sci-fi read. I am going to recommend it from now on as a book for those looking to get into sci-fi because it is a great introduction to the genre. To say that I am DYING for the next book in the series is an understatement.
